Phase 1 Orthodontics

How Phase I Orthodontics Can Help

Many orthodontists identify Phase 1 to mean the same as interceptive orthodontic treatment and it normally starts at an early age. In most cases, the treatment is done even before the permanent teeth have begun erupting at the age six to ten years. It applies mostly to young patients with baby teeth and adult teeth and is commonly done under extreme circumstances where the dental development needs to be corrected.

It is also performed when the doctor tries to prevent current jaw or dental problems from becoming severe as the child continues to grow. In some cases, not every child undergoes the Phase 1 process but for those who experienced the process benefit from the complete dental care. For those individuals who require the Phase 1 treatment, it is different from Phase 2 as Phase 1 is designed for early intervention. Some of the Phase 1 treatment includes retainers or partial braces.

The whole purpose of the treatment is to help in developing the child’s jaw to make more room for future eruption of permanent teeth. The treatment also aims at improving the relationship of the lower and upper jaws. An upper or lower jaw that is not enough or growing too much can benefit from the orthodontic treatment.

With the early intervention and correction, cases such as jaw surgery, late removal of permanent teeth or dental trauma are avoided. If the condition is detected and not treated until the permanent teeth have erupted, it can lead to extreme problems that cannot be corrected by braces alone. Majorly, the Phase 1 treatment is usually between nine to eighteen months and after that, the patient will wear retainers and go for a checkup after every four to six months while waiting for permanent teeth to erupt. When the permanent teeth erupt, the patient enters the phase II treatment.

Improved lip competence
Improves the jaw growth in a positive way
Reduce the likelihood of permanent teeth from being extracted
Reduce chances of impacted permanent teeth.

For the orthodontic treatment to be complete, it takes between six to thirty months as the treatment duration depends on various factors and circumstances. These factors include the perseverance of the patient, the classification of malocclusion, and the dental device being used in the treatment. In this treatment stage, an orthodontist makes a precise diagnosis to help in realigning the patient's teeth in the most expedient and efficient way.

The next check up to the doctor entails various evaluations that include:

Dental and medical evaluations: Doctors have often noticed that the physical and dental problems tend always to go hand in hand. Difficulties with the oral cavity can be caused by or lead to mental problems. Thus, the entire goal of this evaluation process is to ensure both dental and mental issues are under control before any treatments start.

Study model evaluation: In this step, the patient is expected to bite into a dental tray that is filled with a gel substance. The gel content helps in hardening the teeth. Later, the gel is removed and filled with plaster that assists in modeling the patient’s teeth. Through this, the orthodontist can scrutinize every tooth identifying how they relate to each other.

Panoramic x-rays: With the help of an X-ray, it becomes easier to view pre-existing damage and potential complications to the jaw joint. The orthodontist is also in a position of identifying the exact location of every tooth and its root.

Computer generated pictures: With the help of these images, the orthodontist can identify the treatment plan and determine how the treatment will affect the symmetry and face of the jaw.

Photographs: Pictures are taken before, during and after the treatment to help the orthodontist assess how the treatment is progressing and what is the impact of the treatment on the patient.

Phase I treatment has assisted in identifying the problem and avoiding the issue from being severe.
